A small, wonderful, peaceful place off the South Downs Way, of interest to those who love wildflowers, and orchids in particular. Coulter's Dean is a by now unfortunately rare piece of chalk grassland which still sustains considerable biodiversity. Among the orchids to be found there are mainly the spotted, the pyramidal, the twayblade and a couple of others. Someone told me once that there were also some bee orchids, which I myself have never been able to discover. If you visit the place, please stick to the small trampled footpath so as not to damage the flora!

It is a nice little place to stop by if you're walking the south downs trail. Very small area so not a destination to walk to. No dogs allowed. Nearest carpark is about a mile away.

Abigail McKern Walking With Poetry
I visited this place for the first time on VE DAY 2020. It was the most perfect day and I was there alone with my camera. The Nature reserve was full of yellow cowslips and I found quite of few of the treasured wild orchids. I was very peaceful and beautiful. Thank god these places are protected and thank you to the volunteers who do such important work!
