When we realised dad could no longer live alone, I began to look into every care home on Hayling island, which specialised in dementia care and mental health disorders. I visited six care homes in total which all had their merits, but when I met Christina at Gorseway Manor, I knew I'd found the right place. I had noted their CQC rating showed room for improvement, but I knew the home was under new management, so I was keen to meet the people who would be caring for dad - and make the judgement for myself. We found dad a lovely bright room with ensuite and balcony overlooking the gardens. Unfortunately when it was time to move in, covid restrictions meant dad needed to be quarantined for two weeks. This was understandably very hard for him, but the care team rallied round: building his furniture, making his room homely, setting up his record player so he could play his beloved lps - all while bringing him tasty meals to his room (which he gave rave reviews). I quickly got to know all the carers by name as they are all so personable and naturally kind and helpful. Gorseway Manor has its own 'roaming' carer mobile, so family can ring or text at any time to ask for an update, book a visit, or just have a video call with their loved one. While I was unable to visit with dad, the team kept me updated with pictures and videos of him to help reassure me. Now dad has settled in, he is able to enjoy the freedom of The Manor. He's often found working on puzzles in the lovely wood panelled dining room, chatting with staff in the cosy tv den, pumpkin carving, having guitar sing-alongs and of course, regular walks of the beautiful grounds - often with a visit to feed the koi carp in the pond. Whenever I visit, the staff take time to update me on what dad has been up to. They ensure he is clean shaven, with washed hair, and smartly dressed - dad likes to take care in his appearance and they heartily support this. The activity schedule at The Manor is sadly reduced due to covid, but in ordinary times, the home welcomes in primary children and nurseries to engage with the residents, animals and pets come to visit, guests come to sing and entertain. There is a sunny recreation room with piano and games area where the residents are joined by those from the sheltered housing for regular coffee mornings and other social activities. Gorseway Manor is located just a short walk from the sea front and I have been able to take dad for some lovely seaside walks and lunches nearby. The home shares the five acre site with the sheltered housing block and a nursing home, so as dad's needs develop he can continue to be cared for within the grounds. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Gorseway Manor and its supportive team of carers to anyone looking for a safe and homely environment for their family member. Contact Christina and she can talk through your needs and take you on a virtual tour of the home.
