I have been a student here for about a year now, and it is the best Martial Arts School I have been to by far. The Chief Instructor Shifu is an incredible martial artist and a very intelligent and patient teacher who will work with you, whatever your level of skill or knowledge, guiding you along your martial arts journey. He also teaches several hundreds of british army soldiers for the grenadier guards so that they can perform their duties more effectively. Schools like this one are few and far between. If you have a desire to learn true, traditional, tried and tested self defence,Taichi or Kungfu you should definately come down and give it a go. On the other hand if you are egotistical, unwilling to learn and unable to have respect for others than I suggest you find someplace else, this is not the place for you.

I've been a student of the Academy for the past 3 years. I started with Tai Chi and then started attending Kung FU about 2 years ago. In Tai Chi you get to learn how to meditate to clear your head and calm yourself down. This in itself is an amazing skill to learn and has saved me from boiling over once or twice over the years. Learning the forms in Tai Chi has enabled me to coordinate my movements in a far more precise way than any martial art training I have previously taken, often because there are 3 limbs in unique motion that all have to arrive at their designated positions at the same time, anyone can learn how to do this regardless of ability level or age, it just takes patience and practice. We spend time ensuring that our joints and muscles are getting stretched enough that our bodies remain limber and subtle, during the class, which is great if you're like some of the older students at the academy and the variety of times and classes available ensure you can find a time and class to match your pace. Neil is a great teacher, not only because he understands the forms so well but also because he understands the applications for them and how the human body works so well. He can spot very quickly if you are performing an exercise that will cause an injury to yourself and actively makes sure no one is potentially harming themselves in class. The Kung Fu is a great work out, but you also get to learn how think through a confrontation, 'keeping your head while others lose theirs' is something that we learn in training. This is not a hyper aggressive class, it's more akin to focusing your energy and striking at the perfect moment, whilst not getting clattered when waiting! I have learnt so much in my time at the Academy, both about my body, mind and how to look after myself in an entirely different way, against single opponents, multiple opponents, unarmed and armed. Neil is a patient teacher, who takes the time to make sure you get something out of each class. If you are looking for a Kung Fu or Tai Chi class, or want to get in to martial arts, this is the best school by some distance around these parts.
