At four storeys high, this is the tallest and most impressive of the four main gateways in the medieval city walls. Its role as a defensive tower is evident in the stone figures of men throwing rocks from the turrets, and the murder holes through which boiling liquids were poured on to the heads of would-be attackers. If you look up when walking under the arch you'll see the spikes of the still functioning portcullis, last lowered in 1953 to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. You have to climb a steep and narrow internal staircase from the street to get on to the city wall, there's a handrail but you need to mind your head on the low ceiling. I well recommend the wall walk from here to Bootham Bar, it gets very busy with sightseers but there are wonderful views of the Minster and its precincts along the way.
