I saw Mr Richard Callaghan for two appointments around 6 years ago (2012/2013). I was 19/20 then, I am 25 now. His assessment at the end of my first appointment was that I had a condition known as a forefoot varus. This is essentially a ridged bone deformity in the foot meaning the forefoot sits on a different plane than the rearfoot. It is a very rare condition. I now know that actually many podiatrists and medical professionals don’t even think it exists as a natural condition in adulthood. He made me insoles to wear for the condition and I wore them diligently, innocently believing as I was told that they would help me with my shin splints I had at the time. I went back for a second appointment 6-12 months later because the pain I was feeling around my shins had worsened. What is certain after seeing 3 more podiatrists in these 6 years, I do not and therefore have never had a forefoot varus. I have never had a bone deformity of my feet which means that unless I wear insoles prescribed for the condition, I will not be able live my life without pain. I vividly remember Mr Callaghan telling me at my second appointment that if were not to wear insoles that were made particular for the condition, my feet would not function correctly and I would therefore continue feeling the pain I was experiencing. He said this in light of me telling him my pain had got worse. He was wrong. Rather than emphasising physical therapy he emphasised the use of the insoles. I believe that the pain issues that I’ve had to deal with during these six years were exacerbated by this error that Richard Callaghan made. I was being told I needed to wear insoles that I should not have been wearing and I believe they were extremely damaging to the natural biomechanics of my body. Chronic and medically unexplained pain is complex and does not go away easily once it’s begun, as I’ve found out. It’s a long hard road out of it. However, I do see the wearing of these insoles and the psychological effects of being told ‘You need to wear specially made insoles in order to function correctly’ as a key domino in the development. There are three possibilities: 1. Mr Callaghan was negligent with his assessment 2. He was eager to get me to pay for insoles and instill in my mind a sense of necessity for them. Insoles provide a cycle of income for the podiatrist and viewing it cynically perhaps, are a key component of the business model. Customer buys insoles, insoles wear down and customer buys more insoles. 3. Both 1 and 2. I do not doubt Mr Callaghan has helped people with their problems. Unfortunately something went very, very wrong with me. I wish to make people aware that, as I’ve been told by all podiatrists since seeing Mr Callaghan, the overwhelming majority of people do not need to wear prescriptive insoles to sort their issues out. They are a supplement for most people and being pointed in the right direction with physical therapy will be the main remedy to living a life pain free. I only wish Mr Callaghan had had this attitude with me when I saw him.

I am a keen cyclist and a recurring problem both kept me from riding and gave me pain in my foot, big toe and knee. I tried 2 other podiatrists who did not solve the problem with off the shelf fixes and dodgy diagnosis and so my faith and confidence in podiatrists wasn't high. In stepped Richard who was very reassuring right from the off. The result, confidence restored (although i wouldn't go anywhere else now) pain gone, back on my bike and very happy. The cost of an expert tailored fit looks expensive at first glance but it is actually very cheap vs lifestyle restrictions if you get the results....thanks Richard.

I am a runner and before visiting my achilles tendon was always very sore and I had issues with my big toe. Richard has helped resolve these issues and I have been running for 8 months with no injuries!! I find Richard and the team very friendly, knowledgeable and pragmatic. Overall I have found the services offered to represent very good value for money.
