Was super excited to take 7 of my friends to dinner last Friday night to celebrate a 50th birthday after taking 15 employees there the year before for our Christmas team meal and having fond memories of the fab food and lovely fun atmosphere. However, Smoke & Rye now seems to be Square & Rye. Having not even been served our drinks a rude and patronising female waiter approached our table and told us in no uncertain terms that we were being too loud and that there was, quote, 'no swearing allowed in the restaurant'. Had we been sat in a Brewers Fayre at lunchtime surrounded by young families I perhaps may have understood however we were not. And there were only two other tables with guests on the floor we were sat. Needless to say this left us feeling rather unwelcome. So much so that we only ordered 1 round of drinks, half the party cancelled their dessert order and we left. I will no longer recommend Smoke & Rye to people, nor will I be visiting again, which is such a shame as the chef team are amazing; the food was glorious.

Loved the place. But just read the reviews about the changed menu and had a look at it online. Won't be going back in a hurry. You've lost the plot big time. What are Mussels doing on the menu of a Smoke House. Your ribs, steak and burgers were brilliant. Get back to what you were very very good at and drop the 'gourmet' pretentions!
