I’d been trying to teach myself the guitar chord by chord, but was making no progress. Someone recommended I try the Spanish Guitar Centre (now Guitarnotes) where Catherine agreed to give me private lessons. She took a look at my guitar and told me it was of very poor quality. Fortunately, she happened to sell guitars, so I bought one from the range she advised were suitable for students. Catherine made it clear from the start that she taught Classical Guitar, which involves students learning how to play from real music scores. This is much more challenging (and interesting) than just learning chords. No singing is involved and no strumming (except perhaps in some esoteric modern pieces). She introduced me to the greats of the guitar: Sor, Tarrega, Barrios, Torroba etc. Although they aren’t household names they wrote music which is central to the classical repertoire. I’m a slow learner. Catherine was very patient. Fortunately, she stocked a huge selection of music and every few weeks she would bring along to the lesson new music for me to buy and learn. I didn’t know many classical pieces, so she would select a shortlist of music books for me, based on what she thought was appropriate. I now have a large library of guitar music and have had to buy a music cabinet to store it in! Although it took a long time, I passed my Grade 8 exam (with Merit) and I regularly buy music from Guitarnotes. Their Customer Service for music purchasing is excellent. I recently purchased music which was unfortunately damaged in the post. Guitarnotes very kindly offered to sell me another copy at cost.
