St Martin's is a real treasure trove of delights if you like your churches ancient, intimate and steeped in history. It is the oldest church in the English-speaking world which is still in use, and features Roman, Saxon, Norman and medieval architecture. Even though St Martin's tends to play 3rd fiddle to Canterbury Cathedral and St Augustine's next door, it's well worth a look. Especially thanks to the fascinating lady who was on duty to provide a superb guided tour. Unlike the very expensive Cathedral, St Martin's is free to enter ... although I reckon a donation is in order if you are lucky enough to get the guided tour :-)

I have visited the church a few times before over the years, and visited last week while showing relatives around. The church is now open for tourist visits and the guide was fantastic. Jeanne was brilliant at bringing the place alive and linking it with the rest of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. I would certainly recommend visiting if you are seeing the Cathedral and St Augustine's Abbey. Try to get there when there is a guide on duty, though there are information boards available if visiting outside of these hours.
