St. Mary's is a beautiful, traditional Essex church, easily missed because it's set so far from the road, amongst horse paddocks & mature chestnut trees. Despite being only a short walk from both Dedham & Stratford-St-Mary villages, John Constable never studied this St. Mary's as he did the other pair. Both the church & churchyard have some truly unique curiosities to be found. The church is notable for having carved wooden South & North porches, as well as a carved lychgate. The churchyard also contains the curiousity of a separate Sunday schoolhouse, which, according to a mounted sign, was built for the benefit of poor young ladies. Another notice hung in the church porch, The Dumb Animals' Humble Petition, is a cast iron roadsign once erected on nearby Gun Hill. It beseeches passing drovers to rest & water the cattle in their care, before the push uphill towards market in Colchester. A memorial in the church is dedicated to a former Rector's son who died in Santa Fe, Argentina, aged just 26. (Unfortunately, cause of death isn't recorded...) Jerry the church cat; Unfortunately, Langham church no longer has its resident cat, Jerry, who welcomed (most) visitors for nearly 2 decades. Jerry was a beautiful, slick black cat who enjoyed following visitors around the church, then curling up on their laps if they sat outside on the benches. He was a remarkable character who made a lasting impression on many of those who met him. I've no doubt that Langham's churchyard cat truly sensed the importance of the site & assumed himself the role as its guardian. He was even featured in the local newspaper for having become so associated with St. Mary's. Much as Langham church has to offer the visitor, it's nonetheless a poorer place since Jerry passed away.

This church is featured in a number of John Constable’s best-known paintings, most notably the several versions of “The Glebe Farm and Langham Church”. This is a Grade I listed building, consisting of a chancel, nave and south aisle built largely of pebble-rubble and pudding-stone construction of various dates from the 12th to 19th centuries. In the 1980s the exterior of the church was extensively restored and in 1994 a major renewal programme was initiated. The most obvious manifestations so far are the elegant gallery and fine organ at the west end and the baptistry in the south aisle.The organ has been extensively rebuilt using many of the original pipes. The tower has 6 bells ranging from 1618. This fine church in a lovely setting is open to visitors and well worth a visit.
