Oooo, if, like me, you are a fan of stained glass, you really need to visit this old Grade 1 listed church. I had the opportunity on the newly formed and hopefully annual event, "York Unlocked". Medieval stained glass at its finest. The oldest part of the church dates from the 11th century, so it can be forgiven for a bit of peeling paintwork. If you have gone to admire the stained glass, then that's what you see, not the perceived 'tattiness' of the building. The nave dates from pre Norman Conquest; there is a Jacobean pulpit; Georgian breadshelves and a 15th century font. There is plentiful information abounding on notices and in files on all the glass windows. The stained glass is awesome. You need to confirm opening times if you are planning a visit, as it is not always open. (Incidentally, the University Of York is the only UK establishment offering a degree in stained glass conservation and heritage.)
